Are your interested in attaining your Grad IOSH?

Vocational training is mostly aimed at working professionals whereas academic education focuses on the overall development of an individual. It imparts complete schooling of the individual. University education from the very beginning is aimed to nurture the mind both for academic research and living in a community. Here are different routes of attaining Grad IOSH these routes include:

  1. NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety.
  2. British Safety Council International Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety
  3. NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) level 5 diploma in occupational health and safety.

Grad IOSH

Students often prefer the above route just because the qualifications are marketed, branded, and packaged well. Did you ever stop to think or even form once consider that you may already be eligible for Grad IOSH? So why spend your hard-earned money on gaining something you have already earned? Did you know should you wish to immigrate to Canada, New Zeland, or even Australia, only academic qualifications are taken into account while calculating your final score. A professional course like NEBOSH International Diploma, British Safety Council International Diploma,  etc does not count towards your score.

IOSH is one of the only chartered body for H&S professionals. In addition it also consists of one of the largest health and safety membership in the world. Over 200,000 people take an IOSH course every year. Founded in 1945 today IOSH has over 50,000 members.

Is being a member of IOSH beneficial? Would it matter should you be a Tech, Grad or CMIOSH? Do you need a membership with IOSH?

Members of IOSH are the most sought-after and trusted by people in the Health and Safety profession. In simple language it means businesses trust your credentials, your abilities and more importantly your knowledge which meets the required standards.

What is the different designation for an IOSH member?

In all, there are six membership levels

  1. Affiliate
  2. Associate (AIOSH): Having a clear understanding of safety and health, either one that is nationally recognised or a qualification that is IOSH accredited. You do not yet meet the experience requirements to move on to the next level since you ave just started your career in the field of health and safety.
  3. Technical (Tech IOSH): Professionals working in various roles in the field of health and safety are recognised both for their qualifications and experience. To become a Technical member of IOSH, you need to have at least a level 3 qualification. Once a Technical member post-nominal letters TechIOSH  can be used after your name.
  4. Graduate (Grad IOSH): Once a Technical member post-nominal letters GradIOSH can be used after your name. To become a Graduate member, you will need an OSH qualification, preferably an academic qualification equivalent to the European Qualification Framework (EQF) Level 6.

Once a Chartered member post-nominal letters CMIOSH can be used after your name. When employers work with Chartered H&S practitioner, they know they’re working with someone who has gained international recognition, meet the highest standards and who’s at the top of their profession.
  6. Chartered Fellow (CFIOSH): IOSH’s elite level of professional membership is Chartered Fellowship. To gain Fellowship membership, you must go ‘ above and beyond’ demonstrating outstanding dedication. Once a Fellowship member post-nominal letters FIOSH can be used after your name.

How to easily attain GradIOSH with your Academic Qualification?

Not many students know that their existing Safety Qualification e.g. BSc Fire and Safety, Masters in Occupational Health and Safety, Bachelor of Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety would qualify them for Tech IOSH or even Grad IOSH.

It is a myth that Grad IOSH is achieved only upon completing a UK qualification like the ones listed above. However contrary to this, most academic qualifications from recognised universities and state technical boards would also enable you to achieve Graduate membership with IOSH.

Grad IOSH via your Indian qualifications

Not many students know that their existing (Indian) Safety Qualification would qualify them for Tech IOSH or even Grad IOSH.

Graduate Member (Grad IOSH) This category is for people who are working towards becoming Chartered Members. They will be asked to complete Initial Professional Development (IPD).

It is a myth that Grad IOSH is achieved only upon finishing a UK qualification like the ones listed above. However contrary to this…

Most Indian qualifications from recognised universities or Govt bodies would also enable you to achieve membership with IOSH . E.g. Post Graduate Diploma course from CLI, RLI, MSBTE are some of the qualifications eligible for Grad IOSH. (No exams required)

Let me put it this way, every morning when we wake up once of the first things we do is brush our teeth using our preferred brand of toothpaste. I would amuse if your brand is Colgate, then again you wouldn’t brush your teeth once again (same day )in the morning using a Pepsodent or Patanjali or some other brand

Similarly for a safety professional once he has completed his Advanced Diploma in Industrial Safety (RLI, CLI or MSBTE), he/she may not be required to again take up a UK professional qualification like (NEBOSH Diploma, BSC Diploma etc). With your Indian qualifications combined with your work experience, you may already be eligible for Grad IOSH.
