Course Overview

There is no requirement for any prior health and safety knowledge. However, candidates must note that the assessment includes a provision to write a brief report.

The NEBOSH course is divided into three main modules:

  • Management of international health and safety (IGC1)
  • Control of international workplace hazards (GC2)
  • International health and safety practical application (GC3)

Assessment of the NEBOSH International General Certificate

Students are evaluated with written examinations for each of the two units, IGC1 and GC2. There is also a practical assessment for unit GC3, designed to help students apply their learning at work.

IGC1 and GC2 are both assessed by two 2-hour written exams of 10 short answers, 8-mark mandatory questions, one long answer and 20 marks compulsory question. On the other hand, the GC3 assessment is a 2-hour practical examination. NEBOSH appoints external examiners who are in charge of correcting the papers.

The passing marks for the NEBOSH exams, i.e. IGC1 & GC2 and the practical exam (GC3) are 45% and 60% respectively. NEBOSH does not have a total score to pass the exam. In other words, you have to pass each module independently.

NEBOSH GC3 – The International Health and Safety Practical Application

The NEBOSH certificate practical assessment takes place at your workplace The inspection and the management report can either be written by hand or word processed. No time limit is set here. However, the NEBOSH guidelines suggest that the whole exercise should be completed within two hours and the management report should be around 700-1000 words in length.

Entry Requirements

Professional Recognition and SQA Accreditation

NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety is credit rated as well as accredited by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) Accreditation. It, therefore, sits in the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) at SCQF Level 6 along with 15 SCQF credit points.

Further, the SCQF Level 6 is comparable to RQF/CQFW Level 3 in England, Northern Ireland and Wales.


Delegates of the NEBOSH IGC are entitled to:

  • Associate Membership (AIIRSM) of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM).
  • Associate Membership (AIOSH) of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). Also, this qualification meets the academic requirements for Technical Membership (Tech IOSH) of IOSH.

Examination Registration

Examination Entry Confirmation

Once we have registered you for the NEBOSH exam, we will send you an examination entry confirmation which will include your student number. Note that the student number is the only identification that you may use on your exam scripts. The scripts cannot include your name.

The Examination Entry Confirmation is necessary to gain entrance to the exam room. Furthermore, you will need to show some form of photographic identification to the invigilator and then sign the Examination Entry Confirmation.

Examination Results

Students will receive the NEBOSH exam results (including the practical application) within 50 working days from the date of the exam or submission of the assignment. The examination entry confirmation contains the specific date.
